Ask a Travel RN Housing Expert: How much should housing cost?

travel nurse confused about housing optionsAsk a Travel Nursing Housing Expert Question:

Hi, I will be taking my first travel assignment and just received my housing option. It is for an extended stay hotel in New Jersey approx 20 mins away from the hospital. I guess my question is how much should housing cost and how far away should I truly be? (The hotel and the hospital are in different cities.) My recruiter told me that the apts or hotels in the same city were “too expensive.” I just want to make sure that I am being offered something that is fair.

Thank you for all your help!

Ask a Travel Nursing Housing Expert Answer:

This is a great question and one asked very often. The recruiter is right in one sense, but it depends on what “too expensive” means. Furnished apartments in big cities around New York and New Jersey are quite expensive when you are right downtown. There are usually many other options just outside the city centers that are much more economical. The question about how much a furnished apartment should cost is not as easy to answer because there are so many variables to consider like location, size, how it is furnished, what the amenities are, length of stay and many others.

The best thing to do is to ask your recruiter what your housing allowance is, if you are given an option for one in your contract, then make the comparison on your own by contacting a company like to give you some estimates on furnished apartments so you can determine yourself if you are being offered a fair deal. Generally speaking, though, the budgets offered by nurse staffing companies for housing are sufficient to provide a very basic furnished apartment in a safe and secure location, just not a high-end luxury suite in a city center.

Quite often, a staffing company will elect to use an extended stay hotel (not the best place to live for 3 months) if they do not have enough staff to locate suitable furnished apartments or if they don’t have a company that does this for them. You might suggest to your recruiter to give a call to to assist him in his search not only for your furnished apartment, but for all of his furnished apartment needs. This is usually a win-win for both the staffing company and the nurse traveler, it saves them time and money, and the nurse usually ends up with better, more comfortable temporary accommodations.
