Ask a Travel Nurse: Who do you suggest for Travel Nurse tax preparation?

Ask a Travel Nurse Question:

I’m trying to find a trustworthy, reliable tax company that knows how to do taxes for Travel Nurses. Who do you suggest for Travel Nurse tax preparation?

Ask a Travel Nurse Answer:

That’s actually an easy one!

Head over to and you can download one of their workbooks to help keep you organized through the year.

Then, come tax time, Joseph Smith and his gang do federal returns for around $250 with each state an additional $50.

Joseph was once a traveling healthcare professional and is now an enrolled agent with the IRS (sort of a “next level” tax guy). He is well known in the travel world and when I published my book on Travel Nursing, I asked him review the tax section just to be sure all the info was correct.

I also tell many travelers that the FAQ page on his site is a MUST read for every Travel Nurse.

I hope this helps.

About the Author:

Hello everyone. I’m a travel nurse originally from Ohio who graduated in 1993 from Mount Carmel School of Nursing in Columbus. I completed a critical care fellowship at Riverside Methodist Hospital in 1994 and started traveling in that specialty a year later. My first travel assignment was in Maui and since that time I have completed close to 40 different contracts in various states with multiple travel companies. I am the author of Travel Nurse’s Bible (A Guide to Everything on Travel Nursing), in addition to my writings here and in the pages of Travel Nursing publications such as Healthcare Traveler Magazine and American Nurse Today. I am presently on assignment in Phoenix, AZ and travel anywhere from six to eleven months of the year.

  1. Tax question

Can I work 3 assignments per year in the same city (Reno, NV) and still keep my tax home where I own a home and pay utilities (Louisiana)? I would love to work 9 months per year here and go home between assignments.

  2. David says:

Many travelers do exactly what you just described. Do be careful if you accept a forth assignment as tax implications can arise the moment you know that you will be away from your tax home beyond a year (and not just at day 366).

For more on this, take a look at Joseph Smith’s website, Joseph is well known in the travel community and has a FAQ page on his site that I believe to be mandatory reading for any travel nurse (FAQ site is

This page also has some info on how long you should spend at home (see questions, “How long can I stay? When can I come back?”)

    I hope this helps.

  3. Hello Dave, I will be giving up my apartment up in Jan 2021 in Florida. I am taking on my first assignment next week. I plan to live a nomadic life . I do not want to ask family or friends to use their address. How does that work with taxes? I do not want any problems with IRS. I just do not see the need to rent or buy at this time in my life. Thank you, PAula Barakos
