When you think Skechers or New Balance what is your first thought? If you answered scrubs you are probably the only person in the world. Well known for their respective shoe lines, both the Skechers and New Balance brands have decided to enter the soiree that is the medical apparel industry.
The first line of Skechers brand scrubs has already launched (check out the Skechers scrubs here if you are interested). The scrubs are being manufactured and distributed by Strategic Partners Inc. (SPI), better known as the same people that make Cherokee and Baby Phat scrubs. The first roll out was hyped up a great deal by SPI and it seemed to have worked. Almost the entire first run of products sold out to retailers before they were even available for delivery.
The Skechers brand was built on their popular shoes and they have brought that specialty to their medical line. The medical shoes featured are all slip resistant and should be comfortable in any situation. You will find options from athletic shoes to the more traditional Mary Jane style nursing shoe.
New Balance is another interesting new scrub brand that is going to be on shelves in the near future. They will be produced by the same company that makes GelScrubs, who have really made their name with collegiate logo’d scrubs. While they have not yet revealed the details on any specific products, hopefully they will be comfortable (its what New Balance is known for!). What may be more exciting is the potential for New Balance shoes that specifically target the nursing industry.
It does appear that 2010 is the year of shoe companies entering the medical apparel market. Will they be successfully? Only time will tell. All in all, it never hurts to have more fashion options for the clothes you wear to work every day. If shoe companies want to put out scrub lines, let them. Who knows who will be the next to enter (Red Bull scrubs anyone???).
