Ask a Travel Nurse: How can I find which Travel Nursing agency staffs hospitals in the locations I want to work?

Ask a Travel Nurse Question:

First, I’m preparing for my first Travel Nursing assignment and I want to say that I really appreciated your book. It’s been a really huge help! Second, my wife and I would like to go to four specific locations and I would like to determine what agencies staff the hospitals in these locations. What is the best way find this information? How can I find which Travel Nursing agency staffs hospitals in the locations I want to work?

Ask a Travel Nurse Answer:

I would say that the “best,” meaning, easiest and least time consuming way, would be to choose several hospitals in each location and call them directly and ask with which agencies they work.

They may or may not share this information and I would expect some vague responses and unreturned phone calls, but when determining the companies working with any given hospital or system, it may be best to go directly to the source of the employment.

Another way might be to call several medium to large-sized travel agencies, and ask if they service each area. A recruiter quick to align you with their company may simply ask which areas you would like to go and then confirm that they offer assignments in each of those areas. However, I would go a step further and then ask the recruiter to pull up current listings they have for each geographic location. This goes a step further to validate their claim and may help you assess the trustworthiness of a recruiter.

If you are looking at travel to major cities, then it is likely that many of the medium to larger agencies will have assignments in the areas you seek. However, there is also nothing that says that you must employ one travel agency for all your travel needs. Many seasoned Travelers use multiple companies to get them to the locations they desire.

    I am getting ready to start my first travel nursing job. I have been a nurse for 15 yrs. My question is the taxable income, non taxable income. Should I have a high hourly rate? I am finding most companies are saying 20 in the norm. Then they give you the travel expenses..

    Hey Lorie. Typically, your hourly rate will be a lot lower than it would with a staff position in nursing. However, this is often due to participation in a company’s tax advantage program.

    You must of course be certain that you are eligible to participate in any tax program, usually accomplished by maintaining a “tax home”.

    If you are unfamiliar with the tax implications of travel, there is a webpage that I consider to be mandatory for any nurse starting in travel. It is on the site of Joseph Smith, sort of a tax guru in the travel world. He prepares many returns for traveling healthcare professionals and is an enrolled agent with the IRS (kind of a “next level” tax guy).     I recall reading a preference for an Apt vs extended-stay; why’s that? If both are fully furnished, and a room’s a room, what’re comparable pros/cons.

    Hey Jessa. For some, there may be no difference other than the money….with extended stays usually being cheaper to the company. You usually see this with companies that are offering higher hourly rates. The companies that provide a one bedroom apartment typically have a lower hourly because they are allocating more money toward housing.

    For me, it is a major difference that might take actual experience for some travelers to understand.

    When I am staying in a place for three months at a time, I want to be housed in a place that feels like a normal home; that is accomplished with a one bedroom apartment. An extended stay (to me), is little more than a room with a kitchen.

    I like to feel part of a community, living among others who are in the apartment complex, versus feeling like a traveler, living among others traveling for their jobs, who may only be staying for a short period of time or even just a night.

    While some extended stays will certainly have the same aminities as apartment complexes (pool, workout room, etc), in an apartment, I can have my own private wifi (where I don’t have to worry about how secure the network may be), my cable or Direct TV with all my beloved movie channels, and the feeling of being in a true home away from home. I just don’t get that same feeling in an extended stay hotel.

    If you want to earn a higher hourly by taking the extended stay, or you prefer the “feel” of an apartment complex, it really comes down to nurse preference in committing to the place you will call home for at least three months of your life.

    If I would like to work closer to home (my taxable base, where I own a house), ideally I would like to know which company staffs the local hospitals. I live in a rural area and would need to know if it would be possible to work at that hospital. Is there no other way to find out which company staffs them other than cold calling?

  6. Hey Edith. The best way I know of is to figure out the hospital where you would like to work and call the HR department. Ask them if they employ travel nurses and if so, with which agencies they typically work.
